2006 and 2007 should be the years of the Wimax, but as usual, we will be one of the last major metropolitan areas to get such a service. Constant connectivity on your laptops, anyone?

30 Russian Cities to get Wimax

Wimax is catching up fast in the newer markets as the latest news is that as many as 30 Russian cities are destined to get wireless broadband access through this technology in the coming months. GlobeTel Communications has announced that its subsidiary GlobeTel Wireless has entered into collaboration with Moscow based, Internafta to install Wimax networks in 30 cities throughout the Russian Federation.

The collaboration would see GlobeTel manage the complete network of Wimax installations and they would also be retaining an ongoing 50% shareholding in the operations of the network. They plan to roll out their services in three phases covering 10 cities in each of these stages. The entire process would take around 27 months.

The company has had important meetings with the relevant authorities in the last couple of months for this deal. This included members from the Russian Parliament (the “Duma") and various branches of the Russian telecommunications and technology establishment. During this process, they went on to demonstrate a working version of the HotZone 4010 equipment that will form the backbone of the new 30-city network.

Uli Altvater, President of GlobeTel Wireless added on their plans to connect these 30 cities in Russia: “This is a very large undertaking that will utilize the skills or more than 1,000 people in Russia, Europe, and the United States. This transaction will catapult GlobeTel to a position as one of the top two suppliers and operators of wireless networks in the world.”
