Tragic news all around. Questions abound including the motive and why no cameras within the building (if any) captured anything of relevance. Also wondering how late Ms. Le stayed in the building - as many grad students (and more so in Yale) pull all-nighters. This goes right to the heart of safety for our nation's most up-and-coming scientists and should be treated very seriously.

My guess is that murderers bump each other off, and the criminals who are incarcerated are just waiting to be released before bumping up the crime statistics. At least that seems to be the case here in Boston, our last crime spree was because a lot of crack dealers were released from jail and went back to settle old scores. But I think the case with Ms. Le was a spontaneous case of passion/jealousy/rage?

True enough in general; I was speaking of agnosticism to crime trends at collegiate-level schools specifically.

There's a lot of garbage in the data for crimes, for example, some States' reporting of crime categories that are "optional" Vs. "mandatory" for compilation of statistics by the F.B.I. Illinois is a poster child for this, refusing to report some categories, IMO in order to make the state (and the city of Chicago) appear safer, from a "violent crime" perspective, than it actually is.

Tragedy. Yes. But there are many such tragedies every day, why is this one so much more important? Part of it is the novelty. Part of it is the media fascination with Ivy League schools.

I doubt that graduate schools are getting either more or less dangerous; sensation sells. Dog bites man. These are the stories we get. This is a strange one, with some co-incidental dates, so it's got legs. Which is a shame, but that's the nature of the beast.

Don't forget the media's love affair with Ivy League schools. If this had happened at Okstate, they'd have to pay the reporters' plane tickets and give them free donuts in the morning and free whiskey at night, just to get them to cover it once, much less post a half-a-dozen stories about it.

This is so disturbing. College campuses are becoming so unsafe.

Let's not rush to judgement at this point, although we should all remember that nothing is always what they seem:
