In Los Angeles County, the unemployment rate fell to 11.8% last month. In December 2010, the unemployment rate was 13.0%. Last month, total nonfarm employment expanded by 3,600 jobs. Between December 2010 and December 2011, the number of jobs in L.A. County increased by 12,000 or by 0.3%.

The unemployment rate in Orange County in December was 7.8%, down from the year-ago figure of 9.0%. Nonfarm payroll jobs increased by 1,300 over the month and by 24,600 (an increase of 1.8%) over the year.

In the Riverside-San Bernardino area, the unemployment rate last month was 12.2%, down from 14.0% during the same period last year. Nonfarm payrolls increased by 5,200 jobs over the month and by 22,900 jobs over the year (an increase of 1.7%).

The unemployment rate in San Diego County in December was 8.9%, down from the year-ago estimate of 10.1%. Nonfarm payroll jobs increased by 4,100 over the month and by 26,900 over the year (an increase of 2.2%).

In Ventura County, the unemployment rate flee to 9.4% in December compared with 10.7% in December 2010. Last month, total nonfarm employment increased by 2,400 jobs. Over the year ending in December the number of jobs in Ventura County rose by 4,600.

Where the jobs are:

Statewide, the largest number of jobs created in December was in retail (55,700 jobs). Private education added 13,100 jobs, while small gains were made in health care, professional, scientific and technical jobs, transportation and warehousing, wholesale trade and information. Finance, leisure and hospitality, construction and manufacturing were all down over the month.

Compared to a year ago, however, almost all of the major private industry sectors showed positive job growth. The exception was manufacturing, which was flat. The leading sectors were: Leisure and hospitality (33,800 jobs), professional, scientific and technical (32,000 jobs) and health care (29,500 jobs).

In Los Angeles County, employment in retail trade jumped by 18,000 jobs last month, while most other sectors showed only moderate growth. Employment declined in transportation and warehousing (-11,100 jobs) and leisure and hospitality (-6,600 jobs).

Over the last 12 months, employment in Los Angeles County expanded in retail, private education, information, professional, scientific and technical, health care, construction and administrative services. It's only the the fed money keeping this dream alive. And they'll probably build something to claim it. But it won't be a trip to the capital. The mountains are, and always were, decisive here. There's a reason why Amtrak doesn't go over them now. Rather, it invented the "bus-train."

Yesterday a fuel truck burned under an overpass. The news was full of "how much?" and "who will pay?" So much for government.

California budget deficit grows year-over-year in November. The 20.2% decline in UC and CSU funding is shameful.
