The premier traded world cement company shows CAT-like results with 20% falloff in US vs strong world gains.

Cement is good indicator of inflationary mentality as there are no "shortage" of its constituents, clay, lime, gypsum. The kiln firing adds an important engergy component. Yet in four years the price has tripled here.

The completion of the Yangzhe Dam which at one point was using 2/3 of world supply had something to do with it and no-one wants a plant in their "neigborhoods" any longer. Tariffs protected US producers for most of a decade. Cement is a continuing administrative price conflict in India now. If anything can be brought back into line, Cement can and should be a good early indicator of slowing demand.

Morningstar's latest comments on CX:

Quote:
We are placing our fair value estimate for CEMEX CX under review, as the strength of the Mexican peso against the U.S. dollar is hitting fresh lows today. A weaker peso reduces the value of CEMEX's Mexican cash flows, which have been one pocket of strength amidst abysmal construction activity in the U.S. and Europe. In addition, a stronger U.S. dollar hurts CEMEX's already weak financial health to the extent that Mexican cash flows are mismatched with dollar-denominated debt. We anticipate a reduction in our fair value estimate. Given the fact that CEMEX's equity value makes up only a small portion of total enterprise value due to high financial leverage, small adjustments to our model can have seemingly large impacts on our fair value estimate.

For Cemex, sales were down 2 per cent in South and Central America compared with last year. Not so hot EEM.

Again, debt dragging down "hard assets"--in the face of continuing world demand at historically high prices.
