Hey folks!

New user here, just found this forum through a Google search. Looks like an interesting website. Smile

Alright, I apologize if this might come off sounding a little awkward, but I was hoping maybe you folks could help me out with my question here. So, I'm looking to find the all-time records of the DJI...specifically the intraday highs/lows, and was wondering where I could go about to find these numbers? Notice how I said "intraday" and not "closing". I figured since this was a board dedicated to market discussion, maybe you good folks would know best? Smile

My apologies for such a strange intro post! But, I'll have you folks know that I'm a historian when it comes to stuff like this. :p It seems that in these past 2 weeks alone, we've shatter most of the old records! Shocked

Thanks for any help in advance! Smile

best regards,
DJIA.

Watch these numbers get obliterated in the next week or so before the presidential elections... Can anyone see this happening also? My predicition is that we will hit a new intraday low of over 900...possibly greatly (hopefully not of course!!). And, this idea that I keep hearing that we've already hit "rock bottom"... I dunno about that... I still believe this market will need to hit the 7,000, 6,000, 5,000 levels before it has truely hit the official bottom. Until then, I look for massive sell-offs to occur in the weeks ahead.

Correction: the opening number on 10-6-08 wasn't 10,322.76 as originally posted, but rather 10,325.38 (thanks to this page!) which gives it the 3 points needed to hit the -800 milestone. Still, I would appreciate any confirmation from you good folks on these numbers, just so I know the information that I have is indeed legit. Thanks again for any help on this folks! Smile

Upon further research (again, this is all unofficial), it appears the DOW never quite actually reached the -800 point range on the session (October 6h, 2008)? According to the Yahoo! Finance page, doing a simple substraction on the opening number (10,322.76) from the days lows (9,525.32) comes out to exactly 797.44, which abviously if you do the math comes out roughly 3 shy of the 800 mark. Could someone confirm this for me?

BTW, I should mention, I am still considered quite the noob in the stock market, so I apologize if there is something that I'm missing (which I'm probably betting that I am?)... I'm thinking that there was "rounding" involved in that number, which is why they had classified the intraday highs as being 800 that day?

God, I'm so sorry if I'm confusing anyone here! I've certainly confused myself with all of this! Shocked Laughing

Hey gang, my apologies for the delayed response! Had to take care of some family business last week, so I was unable to check this page. I do appreciate both of your replies on here! Thank you. Smile

Yes, please do send me whatever you have there via e-mail, nodoodahs. I'd greatly appreciate that very much. Thanks pall! Smile

So far from what I can gather (at least in my limited time of researching on the 'net), I have down (unofficially) October 6th, 2008 as being the intraday record low, when the DOW supposedly plunged more than -800 points during the session? But, I cannot confirm this anywhere, if that was indeed an official intraday low on the DOW...?

As for the intraday record high, it would seem to me that last Monday was that day. Not sure of the exact number though, but I do believe I did briefly see the DOW reach +960 points just before the closing bell, before finishing around +936 on the session.

Sorry for any troubles that I might have caused with this thread! I'm guessing that you folks have probably never run into a user/post quite like this one on this site before, am I right? Razz

What can I tell ya, I'm a HUGE history guy, and I just need to know the facts! You don't see records happening very often, so when they do occur, you try to enjoy the moment even in a crisis situation. Very Happy Razz

Thanks again gang! Smile

I have closing prices for the DJ from 1901. Sorry, no intraday going back any further than Yahoo!Finance does.

The closing price limitation is why I used standard deviations instead of average true range (ATR - my fave volatility indicator) in the study linked above.

If you still want it, respond on this thread and I'll send an XLS file to your email in your profile.

Welcome to the forum...hopefully, you'll post what you dredge up from Bill's suggested links, his data sources are the best...I was looking at the intraday from last Friday and then Wednesday and was struck with a "will you loook at that" type of thought...dj
