European Central Bank raises key interest rate by quarter-point

FRANKFURT (AP) - The European Central Bank raised its key interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 2.25 per cent Thursday in a widely expected move that some economists had questioned.

The decision marked the first the bank has raised rates in five years. The last time the bank adjusted rates was in June 2003, which it cut them half a percentage point to two per cent.
