Net hedge-fund leverage slumped to its lowest point this year at 49 percent of balances as of Aug. 10, according to an Aug. 12 note from Morgan Stanley’s prime brokerage, which was sent to Bloomberg by a client of the bank who asked not to be identified for reasons of privacy. Last year, it reached its lowest point on Aug. 31 at 41 percent, data from the New York- based company show. Mary Claire Delaney, a spokeswoman for Morgan Stanley, declined to comment.

Hedge Funds

There is a very interesting article on Reuter's news wire this morning about hedge fund holdings. It seems that as the public became more enthusiastic about equities, globally hedge fund managers were aggressively trimming their holdings. The percentage of the fund's assets invested in the stock market fell from 57.1% in August to 54.9%. This is the lowest allocation to stocks since February. This is a classic case of the pros selling to the public when those folks finally get excited enough to jump back into the markets.
Given the economic news I doubt that any rational professional investors will come rushing back to the market anytime soon. I expect equity percentages to drop further this month as fund managers move to lock in a profitable year. It may not get them back to the high water mark but it does restore their reputation after the last two years. |

What happens when finance "diversifies" into markets not meant for that kind of scale:
