With today's meltdown, the financial sector's share of the S&P 500 market cap has now declined to 9.6%, or just slightly over $670 billion. Contrast this to the peak in 2006, when financials made up 22% of the S&P 500, with a total market cap of approximately $3 trillion.
As a percentage of the S&P 500's market cap, the financials sector is now at its lowest level since 1991, or near the tail-end of the S&L crisis. |
