Will the european turn towards tribalism turn towards the rest of the world?

The answer seems to be yes, with strange, nationalistic, consequences:

Quote:
Germany enjoys a stellar reputation among businessmen in growing markets like India, China or Brazil, which prize “made in Germany” and Beethoven but do not share Europe’s memories of the war. “When I’m overseas, I hear all the time that we should take more pride in our nation,” he said......

.....“I told my Turkish barber that I thought Argentina was going to beat Germany,” said Shayan Parvand, 35, a Hamburg businessman and one of the 16 million people in Germany with what is known here as a migration background. “He got really mad at me, and said, ‘Özil is going to shoot a goal.’ ”

Mr. Parvand’s family could well represent the proud but complex new Germany. He was born in Iran and his wife grew up in the former East; they have a 4-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son.

“I said to my wife recently that I’d like to build a house,” Mr. Parvand said, “and get one of those German flags to go with it.”

"Average salaries" in an outsourced world meet "the middle class":

http://www.cnbc.com/id/38928571

Quote:
Pay experts said business had been caught off-guard by the measure, which was not one of the high-profile battlegrounds of the Dodd-Frank legislation. Companies are now gearing up to lobby the Securities and Exchange Commission, which has to write detailed provisions for the new rule.

The rule could also reward with a relatively low ratio those companies that outsourced low-paid work rather than keeping jobs in-house, lawyers said.

"Globerish," the role of english in a globalized world:

Quote:
“The Story of English,” explains that Globish is an overwhelmingly economic phenomenon—the language of Singaporean businessmen closing deals with the help of a small arsenal of English words, and of European officials calming financial markets by uttering stock phrases on television. He offers a journalistic account of its worldwide use in tandem with a historical one of the development of English as it made its way around the world. This history shows the depth and complexity of the role of English in the political and cultural evolution of the societies to which it spread. Globish’s influence is unlikely to be as revolutionary or as lasting.

It used to be that ARCO would divert gasoline supply from California to dump it in China--keep that golden goose laying golden eggs. Times they are a changin'. It'll be interesting if this trend is allowed to mature:

Code:
China Petroleum and Chemical Industry said China might process a record volume of crude oil in April.  The utilization rate at the 18 top refiners was 90.5% compared to 81.9% in March. Volumes may fall in May due to maintenance, and may rise into year end as more capacity comes on line.

We may be in for a Cadillac summer.... Wink

It's to be expected that the west too would be "globalized." To give is to take. Provocative question: are we now a two-tiered economy?

This trend was clearly in place the last decade as average wages stagnated while asset-rich classes flourished. 70% of that 70% consumer-driven economy is the asset class. More to come? --Or have we turned the corner?

The hollywood platform economy is cracking:

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/eca59020-9646-11de-84d1-00144feabdc0.html

Quote:
Across Hollywood, rival studios such as Sony Pictures, Universal and Walt Disney have awoken to the potential of local language productions. The new interest in the sector is a break with the past, when studios assumed international audiences could survive on a diet of English-language fare.

The shift also points to the growing globalisation of the film industry, which is losing its dependence on the US box office.

The platform economy takes on a regional complexion. It's not just crude:

http://tinyurl.com/pqm6nn

"An economic crisis is a period when you should step back and think: is this the moment to make some fundamental changes."
