Guess 3rd-Quarter Profit Up 75 Percent to $20.7 Million on Robust Sales, Strong Europe Business
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Youth clothing designer Guess Inc. on Wednesday said third-quarter profit surged 75 percent, driven by robust sales and a strong performance in its European business.
Guess reported net income for the quarter ended Oct. 1 of $20.7 million, or 46 cents per share, compared with year-ago profit of $11.8 million, or 27 cents per share. Revenue rose 34.3 percent to $265.6 million from $197.8 million.
Wall Street's consensus view was 37 cents per share, the average forecast of 10 analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial, on estimated sales of $261 million.
Same-store sales -- a closely watched gauge for retailers, measuring sales in stores open at least one year -- rose 8.9 percent in the quarter.
Guess said the positive trends continued in October, when same-store sales jumped 12.3 percent, and total sales increased 22.4 percent to $45.5 million. Guess operated 305 retail stores in the United States and Canada as of the start of October.
Guess shares rose $1.40, or 5 percent, to $29.40 in aftermarket activity. |
