Netflix launches online distribution. Already print DVDs on demand (buys license not hard copies). Behind Blockbuster but model still flawed--can drive to Blockbuster faster than downloading a DVD:

NFLX strikes 28-day delay deal with Fox and Universal:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Netflix Inc. has agreed to delay renting and streaming content from Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. in exchange for getting more movies and TV shows to stream to subscribers over the Internet.

The online movie rental company and Fox said Friday that they signed a new licensing deal that provides for a 28-day delay for new Blu-ray and DVD releases of movies from when they are first available for retail purchase to when Netflix customers can rent or stream them online.

Blockbuster "Avatar" will be among the first films to be released under this agreement. Older films and new TV programming will have "varying dates of availability" depending on what Fox decides, the companies said.

Netflix signed a similar deal with Universal Studios Home Entertainment Friday, and it also made a similar concession to Warner Bros. in January.
