As to be expected, it works differently over there: dis-intermediation, goes a long way to explaining The GOOG's et. al. failure in this "space." The internet does markets well and no place better for traders than the far east. But with 70-cent couriers they've just cut out the middle-man:

Television: the new china in a nutshell.
http://www.economist.com/node/17522454?story_id=17522454
| Quote: | | Not only do many of their shows resemble British and American programmes like “Pop Idol” and “The Apprentice”. They also rip off each other’s formats. “If a show is successful, clones appear almost instantly,” says Rebecca Yang of IPCN, a firm that brokers formats. A few years ago there was an explosion of talent competitions. Then one show offended the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT), not least by conducting a huge text-message vote. Channels are now restricted to one such show per year. Judges are discouraged from abusing contestants and voting is restricted. |
Not quite ready for the "chinese century" but sure as edge on that dead medium, "the mass market." _________________ Today is the Tomorrow you worried about Yesterday! |

For all the friction with Japan the envy burns bright:

China's porcelain revolution took off soon after the communist government gave the green light to private property development just more than a decade ago. Since then, the amount of new urban residential space unveiled each year has doubled. Most apartments are delivered bare, meaning buyers have to outfit them with basics such as bathroom fixtures.
Although many are satisfied with Western-style toilets that often cost no more than $20 here, pricier name brands are gaining traction. Models costing anywhere from $150 to $6,000 now account for about 5% of the toilets sold in China each year, according to Toto officials. The Japanese company has been riding robust growth here, peddling commodes with sleek designs and features such as oscillating bidets, air fresheners and blow dryers. |
