I first mentioned the concept of "Anywhere Gaming" by Microsoft as well as the increasing popularity of the "virtual reality" game "Second Life" in our May 14, 2006 commentary:

http://www.marketthoughts.com/z20060514.html

The original Business Week article cited as many as 170,000 people being "gamers" of "Second Life. That is about two months ago - up from a mere 20,000 a year before that.

The latest CNET article cites a population number in the range of 300 to 400,000 today:

http://msn-cnet.com.com/Business+consulting+comes+to+%27Second+Life%27/2100-1043_3-6107513.html?part=msn-cnet&tag=feed_2516&subj=ns_6107513

Moreover, the place is become less of a "Wild West" and is adopting a more "business friendly" environment. Corporations (such as Wells Fargo) are now building virtual offices in the game. Once more rules and governance tools are in place, this game could really take off (there is already an online population of 10 million who are consistent online gamers). And given the widespread roll-out of WiMax sometime in 2007, games such as "Second Life" could eventually evolve into a very powerful force in the global economy. More to come in this week's newsletter...

Wikipedia at "10"....a tale of dream vs. reality. Case-study: "Vegetarianism" Laughing

Compare and contrast to story of Wikileaks on the same channel:

Truth be told there is no elgalitarianism. Even the dust in the road tends towards hierarchy. That doesn't stop me from using Amazon's Reviews--but isn't that just a new kind of "salesman?

MySpace. The internet is well capable of displacing....itself:

Quote:
The new look has done little to arrest the erosion of its user base. The number of monthly visitors dropped to 54 million in November -- down 3.7 million from a month earlier, according to measurement firm comScore Media Metrix. Advertising revenue has fallen to $347 million, down 26% from a year ago, based on researcher eMarketer's most recent estimates.

Guess "tailored" Weight Watchers ads are not done to taste. Laughing

The GOOG is becoming the fiat dictionary --cept it's not a dictionary. "Nobody spells 'dalmatian' correctly," says one of their guys. They may not be our dictionary but they certainly are becoming our 'language." That verb BTW is in the dictionary.

Bol is blog anointed creator of colloquialism, "my bad" ....and dies. So with the power of martyrdom being a "new truth" is created. It was declared so in the Senate. In the land of a million editors errors become fact, and lies become truths.

Was out at Coachella and checked out the site this weekend. How far things have come since Woodstock! Perhaps too far: There was no shortage of audis, custom BMW sedans...and state-of-the-power GMC C-series motorhomes Wink

On top of that there was the $279 face tickets, $80 buses and polo on the side. There was also a small army of orange-clad ATT'ers. Apple obviously the pusher in disguise. The stock market has been good enough I guess. How long this "industry" can defy it core customers remains a question for our times.

TV wants NOT to be free! Administration now wants a full commitment to the internet and broadcast says no dice.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/13/business/media/13fcc.html?hp

Murdock pushed first and Hollywood strategies such as releasing dvds geographies simultaneously presaged this. Lately been pulling from Hulu and so on..... But there are many ways to spend more than ever on content via Internet. I'd be surprised if broadcast doesn't come along.

Playlist.com, RIAA's backdoor nightmare has been beaten back:

http://www.betanews.com/article/Project_Playlist_gets_mixed_reception_from_record_labels/1229973342

Facebook and MySpace have agreed to stop carrying the (legally linking link (but not downloadable)) music internet space. Lawsuit or no, this shall not stand for is there any better identifier of one teenybopper over another than their music?

Yes I was once young once too before beaten down on this cruel crucible they call a "floor.":

http://searchbeta.playlist.com/tracks#billy%20jack

--no, no, wait, wait, I've come full circle:

http://searchbeta.playlist.com/tracks#shatner%20%22has%20been%22

http://searchbeta.playlist.com/tracks#jesus%20christ%20superstar

Ah...to be young again!
