A recent example:

SMS usage has always been popular in China and in other Asian countries, such as Japan and South Korea. Americans, on the other hand, like to type with their keyboards, and not that much on their cell phones.

During last year's Hurricane Rita evacuation of Houston, SMS was the way to go, as it doesn't take a lot of bandwidth to send text messages. Voice service, however, basically disappeared (where is it when you really need it?).
