Good for China....they have always excelled at all things "micro." And, if not that, all things contra-japan. Looks like that is really where the rivalry lies. Now, if only they figure out what to do with these hundred computers!
And judging from what they've done to my favorite "Lenovo" there's plenty to be done before these chips come "back at us." _________________ Today is the Tomorrow you worried about Yesterday! |

China breaks ground on new supercomputing center:
http://www.hpcwire.com/news/China-Breaks-Ground-on-New-Supercomputer-Center-111093509.html
| Quote: | When you have the fastest supercomputer in the world, you don't want to stick it in just any-old datacenter. So it is that China has released an artist's rendering of the new National Supercomputing Center, which will house the 2.5-petaflop Tianhe-1A supercomputer, the fastest system in the world according to the latest TOP500 list. The disc-shaped, futuristic-looking facility would not seem out of place in outer space, but in reality will be located at Hunan University in Changsha, the capital of central China's Hunan Province.
China's Xinhua News Agency published an image of the new center on Monday, the day after the official stone-laying ceremony. An article at Computerworld examines the significance of the new supercomputer and its glossy new digs in the context of China's larger supercomputing ambitions, starting with slides from a presentation made by an official at the Supercomputing Center of Chinese Academy of Sciences at an exascale computing conference in October. The slides portray an aggressive schedule that if followed would make exascale computing a reality for China in the 2016 to 2020 timeframe.
From 2011-2015, China wants to construct a system in the 50 to 100 petaflop range. For comparison, the US has plans to deploy at least two 20-petaflop systems in 2012, one at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the other at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. |

IBM makes a bold prediction--that China will overtake Europe in terms of pure supercomputing power in just 12 months:
http://www.zdnet.co.uk/news/infrastructure/2010/09/26/ibm-exec-china-to-overtake-europe-in-supercomputing-40090269/
| Quote: | The most recent rankings, published in June, saw China move into the number two spot with its Nebulae system. The supercomputer delivered 1.27 petaflops per second of processing power in a Linpack benchmark, behind the USA's Jaguar at 1.75 petaflops/s. One petaflop/s is one quadrillon calculations per second.
China had 24 rigs in the most recent Top500 list, tied at fourth place with Germany. However, it trailed France (27), the UK (3 and the USA (282). China has been in the list since the second half of 2001, when it entered the rankings with three systems.
For Turek's prediction to be correct, China needs to get more than 100 systems into the list within 12 months, as the pan-European tally currently stands at 144. However, that count may increase. Turek said that Europe, Japan and other countries are making investments in supercomputing that could see them threaten the US's dominance. |
