forbes article
"NEW YORK - Japanese automaker Toyota Motor is doing a lot of things right. The company makes the popular Prius, a gas-electric hybrid car, for which customers happily wait months. It just announced last week that it expected to sell 900,000 cars in Europe in 2004, up from its previous forecast of 860,000. And it is sitting on $21.6 billion in cash. "

In a few ways they're better cars than they've ever been; in other ways, not so much.

Used to be "drive by wire" was a cable to my carburetor's throttle.

"Drive by wire": we'll see more "crashes" as we put our lives more and more into the "hands" of computers.

It's just the price we pay for a better living through electricity.

It may not be the floor mats nor the sticky gas pedals, after all - as Toyota continues to come under fire. This could be one of the greatest crisis that Toyota will ever experience.

October will be the first decent look at clunker-unadjusted sales; november/december providing a true read. The stupid politics fading and things not too bad.

Et Tu Toyota?

http://www.autoextremist.com/current/2009/9/30/the-autoextremist.html

I'd say the near 40% "adjustment" in the Won/Yen rate had something to do with this.

Things are looking up for autos all over (volkswagen, suzuki, excepted). Only Hyundai feeling worse over three months. No need, it showed the way.

Toyota to expand global output by 3%:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Toyota to raise annual output target by 3 pct-paper
Reuters - Sunday, August 9

TOKYO, Aug 9 - Japan's Toyota Motor Corp <7203.T> plans to raise its global output target for the year to March 2010 by three percent to 6.5 million units, the Yomiuri newspaper said, in the latest sign of a nascent recovery in auto demand.

Toyota's inventory adjustment has run its course, and sales are picking up due to various government measures around the world to simulate demand for new cars, the paper said on Sunday.

Governments from Tokyo to Berlin and Beijing have offered subsidies and tax incentives to encourage consumers to buy new fuel efficient models to boost their auto industries, hit hard by the global downturn and ensuing sales slump.

The Yomiuri report comes five days after Toyota, the world's largest automaker, trimmed its annual operating loss outlook by 100 billion yen and edged up its group-based global vehicle sales forecast for the current financial year by 1.5 percent to 6.6 million units.

Toyota officials were not immediately available for comment

Oops--rising sales may just come from too many Lexus drivers:

rffrydr, thanks for posting. Sounds like a great car to drive in typical LA traffic. I personally won't get the solar panel, but the LA sun also makes it a good fit for those considering it here. I may even buy one myself in a couple of years. Cool
