Funny this should come up: for, perhaps until our modern banking/engery infrastructure failures, cattle was king of the Federal bailouts. This link I'd posted a couple years ago underscores the not-so-delicate balance between the open range, drought cycles and overlapping economic cycles; water in summer, feed in winter and the federalization of both--All built up under the cult of "rugged individualism"...right on up to Ted Turner.

The Great Depression meant federal buying of one-sixth the cattle in the US (mainly in that longhorn state) after the template was established by Texas' same great cattle insolvency in the 1880's and the bank runs that ensued thereafter:
