Rumored to be "revolutionary" in nature (ship date is sometime in 2012), as opposed to evolutionary:

Quote:
He continues, "The minimum that folks can take for granted is that the next version will be something completly [sic] different from what folks usually expect of Windows – I am simply impressed with the process that Steven has setup to listen to our customers needs and wants and get a team together than can make it happen. To actually bring together dozens and dozens of teams across Microsoft to come up with a vision for Windows.next is a process that is surreal! The themes that have been floated truly reflect what people have been looking for years and it will change the way people think about PCs and the way they use them. It is the future of PCs…"

Meanwhile Dell, less cash, trades at 11 WEEKS sales. The desktop is dead; long live the desktop.

Windows 8--all in the execution:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/techchron/detail?entry_id=97479

Quote:
The Redmond, Wash. software giant showed off some of the key features of the forthcoming software at its BUILD conference in Anaheim. The potential step forward here is that the company is building one operating system for both PCs and tablets.

On the one hand, that means your future Windows desktop and laptop will offer things like swipe and other gesture controls. But that's far less interesting, to me at least, than bringing the power of a full-fledged operating system to a tablet.

Here's why at least moving in this direction matters: For all that's wonderful about the iPad, there are some things that are incredibly frustrating about it -- and most of them boil down to the fact that it runs on a diet operating system, an OS Light.

A number of standard business tools and common file types simply don't run on it. And even Apple strips down versions of its own software, like Safari and iMovie, for the device.

"One platform to rule them all," noted Zach Epstein, in an enthusiastic take at Boy Genius Report. "The technology exists to enable users to carry a single device that is as portable and usable as a tablet, but also as powerful and capable as a PC. It has a battery that can last all day, but it can also run Photoshop, Excel and Outlook. It can weigh next to nothing and slip into a slim case, but it can also power two monitors and run proprietary enterprise software."

Guess I won't be an owner: popping 2.3% and I don't think we'll see $24 again on Microsoft. --might not see $34 either.

How can number 8 of anything be "revolutionary"? Here's hoping as I look soon to be a shareholder. Probably works across mobile platforms and probably a Winchester house for hackers.....but looking forward anyway.
