Looking at the weekly chart, the trend for XLNX and for semis overall have been down since January 2004, but more importantly the price was bumping against historical resistance right below its 40-week moving average.
On the daily chart, the 50 DMA also crossed below its 200 DMA recently - which is usually a bearish confirmation given that the weekly trend has been down for the last 18 months.

I am ignorant about charts, typically. So what about the chart would you have said made it look short? Add to my knowledge base ...
I wouldn't dig into the books and waste time on XLNX since the opportunity is probably gone, but don't be surprised if I bounce other short ideas off of you. Heck, it might make both of us some money!

Bill,
I did take a look at it yesterday on a chart but no numbers or anything like that. Based on the charts and what I know about the semi business, I would say, yes, it was a short. But if you want me to dig through the books, that may take awhile.

I'm a plodding investor. I am still working on my knowledge base and comfort level with shorting ... I didn't think I was "ready" to short yet, but this is a good data point.
I did find some great stuff on cash flow analysis recently, and I have been applying it one stock at a time as part of my value investing evaluation, i.e. things to rule out companies with. It occurred to me that I could screen for some of this stuff on Yahoo!Finance's excellent free Java screener and find some companies with evidence of problems on their cash flow statements, download their 5-yrs, and consider them for shorts. Then I would watch what happened at their next earnings report. XLNX was pretty bad.
I really want an independent analysis of XLNX - Henry, what would have been your opinion (yesterday) of XLNX as a short candidate? _________________ I haven’t seen a beatin’ like that since somebody stuck a banana in my pants and turned a monkey loose. |
